Everyone Verna made a deal with in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' including Donald Trump

The photos show her rubbing shoulders with major industrialists and politicians, including the Rockefellers and Donald Trump. Roderick’s children are awful people, and Verna enjoys taking their lives. All of them die painful deaths except Roderick’s granddaughter, Lenore, the only good Usher. Verna has to kill her, as it was part of the deal, but she takes no pleasure in her death.

She asks Roderick to meet Dupin at his childhood home, where Roderick and his sister die together. Verna even leaves an address for the siblings, which leads Madeline to their childhood home. Madeline wishes to change the deal that the siblings made with her years ago, but she soon realizes that she cannot have her way this time. Furthermore, all the Usher deaths seem to be accidental, which makes it hard for Roderick to believe that someone can have a hand in them.

This multicolored, turreted, upper middle class house was originally built in 1887 at the base of Mount Washington by real estate developer George Morgan. It has been called "picturesque eclectic," and is a mixture of the Queen Anne and Eastlake styles of architecture. Pasadena Ave. (now Figueroa Street) early in its existence, and bought by motorman James Hale and his new bride Bessie. The couple separated and Bessie converted the richly ornamented home into a boarding house. Many of the house's original interior features are still intact, including wainscoting in the foyer that is pressed paper made to look like embossed leather.

Roderick Usher

The new series from Mike Flanagan introduces us to siblings Madeline and Roderick Usher (Mary McDonnell and Bruce Greenwood), who created an empire with medical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. However, as we learn in the series finale, "The Raven," that empire came at a steep price. Verna then shows Roderick how many people were killed because of his greed.

But while these names are fairly transparent in their references, the significance of "Verna" takes a tad more time to unravel. A banker and Republican senator from Connecticut, Prescott Bush kicked off the Bush Republican political dynasty. Both his son George H.W. Bush and his grandson George W. Bush served as president of the United States. One firm where Prescott Bush worked, Brown Brothers Harriman, was connected to German industrialist Fritz Thyssen, who helped fund Adolf Hitler's rise to power.

In 2011, the Murdoch-owned tabloid News of the World shut down due to its use of phone hacking practices. In Episode 8, “The Raven,” we finally get a glimpse of just what the connection between Roderick and Verna truly is. After bricking up his boss — like in the classic Poe story “The Cask of Amontillado” — Roderick and Madeline Usher find themselves in a bar on New Year’s Eve. Verna/The Raven arrives at the cemetery just after Auggie leaves and, in a voiceover, recites Poe’s “Spirits of the Dead” poem as she places one token on each of their tombstones. Briefly perching atop the graves, The Raven then takes flight, on to her next target. The first challenge for Gugino was differentiating each of her characters from one another, but weaving a common thread through all of them.

Verna has come to collect since Roderick and Madeline will die soon. She starts killing off the heirs one by one until Roderick and Madeline are the only ones remaining. The twin duo ultimately meet their demise as they fight in their childhood home that comes crumbling down with them inside. One of the most interesting and perplexing threads of the finale comes with the way Arthur Pym's story wraps up. She's first present tending bar when Roderick and Madeline stop in on New Year's Eve 1979, and we don't know what's going on with them, but we know they're nervous about something.

She’s a security guard, a potential patient, an employee at a pet adoption clinic, and more—shapeshifting as needed to drive each of Roderick’s kids into madness and their eventual death. As Roderick, his twin sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell), and their lawyer-slash-fixer Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) investigate who she might be, they find her undoctored image throughout history. One supernatural element of the story comes from Gugino’s character, Verna, which is an anagram for raven. Instead, she’s a shape-shifter who moves “in and out like smoke,” as Gugino described, and appears to each of the Usher heirs right before their gruesome deaths.

But despite being a new creation, Verna — and more specifically, her name — is still a veiled Poe reference. "Verna" is an anagram for "Raven," as in "The Raven," Poe's most famous poem. Verna knows the past and the future of every character in the show. It is almost like Verna, whose name is an anagram of the word raven, is death.

They forget all about the deal until Roderick’s children die one after the other within the span of two weeks. All their deaths have one thing, or rather one person, in common — Verna, who has returned to claim her price. In The Fall of the House of Usher, the death of every Usher is linked to a woman named Verna, who changed Roderick and Madeline’s lives years ago. In order to achieve that perspective, Gugino studied her own body language from the inside out.

In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore." The Netflix show follows the Usher family — twins Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) and his many kids — as they die off, one by one.
